New study about FTO fat gene

FTO gene Study (FTO fat gene)

The FTO genotype (rs9939609) has been termed the “fat gene.” This is because it encodes an enzyme (fat mass and obesity-associated protein, also known as alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase FTO) that is positively linked to obesity; individuals who have it are 70% more likely to become obese. However, according to a recent study, people who have the FTO genotype are not necessarily at a large disadvantage when it comes to losing weight.

How the FTO genotype would affect weight loss

In one study, published by the UK’s Northumbria University, several researchers gathered together to analyse how the FTO genotype would affect weight loss following interventions based on either exercise, changes in diet, or drugs. The study was carried out with access to randomised control trials (RCTs). In order to study their participants—who had been selected on account of the fact that they were either overweight or obese, as measured by their BMI, body weight, and/or size of their waistline—8 RCTs were used. Furthermore, the models employed featured dose coding of the alleles so that genetic effects could be examined. Problems correlated with an FTO genotype

The researchers found that, although some of the participants carried the FTO minor allele, this was not correlated with changes in adiposity (i.e., how “fat” a given individual is) after they had undertaken the interventions for weight loss. Moreover, whether an individual was given an intervention based on dietary changes, physical activity, or drugs, the results were similar, regardless, since they all carry this gene. Despite their similarity, such interactions have an at least partial counteraction to the problems correlated with an FTO genotype. This is because, according to the study, a “genetic predisposition to obesity [is] associated with FTO minor allele.”

The FTO genotype

Although the FTO gene type can take on different forms, changes relating to weight loss (as measured by those criteria already indicated) did not vary significantly between the various genotypes, even though the interventions did not all last the same length of time. There were also no significant correlations with regard to other factors, such as age range and ethnic origins.

What the researchers also discovered about the FTO gene

The researchers also discovered that the FTO genotype didn’t affect weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. Screening adults to see whether or not they had this gene would not ensure that they would be successful in their attempts to lose weight.

Ultimately, while this study confirms that the FTO gene is positively correlated with becoming obese, it has a more positive influence: it shows that weight loss strategies in their various forms are equally effective for carriers of the gene. Having the unlucky FTO gene variant isn’t a death sentence. On the contrary, carriers have the same ability to lose weight as those who don’t have the gene.  The fact that they carry it does not limit them in their attempts to lose weight.
