DNA Skin & Acne testing
Acne is strongly linked to genetics, hormones, stress and cosmetics, amongst others. Studies shown that the prevalence of acne in parents increases the risk for children. Furthermore, if both parents have suffered from acne, the child is more likely to develop more severe acne at a younger age.
The genetic Skin & Acne test will identify your genetic predisposition to the development of acne. What’s more, we will provide information on measures you can take – tailored to your genotype – to help reduce the effects of acne and improve the vitality of your skin. The focus will be on the intake and absorption of vitamins A, C and B6, and how the use of cosmetics can influence the health of your skin. It is important to note that, even if you are not affected or concerned by acne – the results of this test and the recommendations given can be beneficial to anyone who is interested in gaining and maintaining healthy skin.
From the Acne and Skin test you will discover:
- Your gene variants in relation to DNA skin health and whether you are genetically predisposed to acne.
- How adequate amounts of vitamins A, B6, and C benefits the vitality and overall health of your skin and help reduce the symptoms of acne, and how your genetic variant affects the absorption of these vitamins and antioxidants. A study of the gene variants R267S and A379V will identify the efficiency of the BCMO1 enzyme to convert carotenoids into vitamin A.
- The extent of which your diet can play a role in the health of your skin by determining nutrient and vitamin content within your body, and which foods to include in your diet and which to avoid to support your genotype.
- How lifestyle factors, such as smoking (reduces carotenoid levels) and exposure to sunlight (aggravates acne), can affect your skin, and what you can do to limit the damage.
- How the use of cosmetics can significantly improve the condition and health of your skin, especially those containing specific vitamins. Using cosmetics with appropriate ingredients can stimulate cell renewal and accelerate exfoliation.
Along with your test results, you will receive a collection of information and recommendations regarding the above-mentioned issues. All advice is prepared according to your genotype. Due to genetic testing and insight being a relatively new field, advice given through our report may differ from that given through other means.
What is acne?
Acne is a common skin condition, affecting sebaceous glands near the surface of the skin which product sebum- an oily substance used to lubricate the hair and keep skin from drying out. When too much sebum is produced, the skin follicles can become clogged, resulting in inflammation and the forming of red spots. While symptoms are physical, the occurrence of acne can cause emotional distress and lead to social anxiety and isolation. It is estimated that up to 80% of the population are affected at some stage of life, usually between the ages of 11 and 30 years old.
